Supes:
In the world created by Charlaine Harris, which True Blood is based on, any supernatural being can be called a 'supe.' A supe was Sookie's nickname for vampires, weres, shifters, maenads, gods and goddesses and all kinds of beings other than humans.

Shape Shifters: Shape Shifters of some sort have appeared in almost every culture. They are generally able to change whenever they choose, though some of them must change at the Full Moon.

In True Blood, a shape shifter can become any animal s/he chooses, or sometimes turns into the last animal they saw. Sam Merlotte keeps a painting of a collie in his office, because that is his preferred form.

The most famous shape shifter was Dracula, who could become both a wolf and a bat.

Weres: The most familiar were is of course the classic wolf man, or werewolf. The curse of the werewolf and the illness in which one believes themselves to transform into a wolf is called lycanthropy.

In True Blood, only Werewolves are called Weres. Others specify the animal they become - Were-Tigers, Were-Panthers, etc.
Theriomorph: In The Dresden Files any thing that shape-shifts from human form to animal form is called a Theriomorph.

Example: Lupine theriomorphs include all kinds of wolf-related shifters.

  • The classic Werewolf can change from a human to a wolf and back using their own Magic.
  • Transmogrification is using magic to turn someone else into a wolf.
  • Hexenwolf, or "spell wolf", uses a talisman, wolf pelt belt, amulet etc., to turn into a wolf.
  • Lycanthropes. When a human is a natural channel for a spirit of rage, they turn into a beast but only in their own minds. More aggressive, stronger, resistant to pain and injury. They are born, not made.
  • Loup-garou. Someone cursed to change into a wolf-like demon, usually at the full moon. Only a weapon made of inherited silver can kill it.
  • Animagus is a witch or wizard who through acquired magical ability chooses to shift from human form to any animal form at will ( i.e. Professor McGonagall and Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series)

Other theriomorphs include: were-panthers, were-bears, were-tigers etc.
Berserkers: The Berserkers, pronounced bare-sarkers, were a breed of Viking Warriors who experienced a kind of rage in battle called berserkergang. During the berserkergang, they were believed to be impervious to weapons, though they wore no armor. They often wore wolf or bear skins to frighten the enemy, and some were said to actually turn into their animal. After the battle, when the rage subsided, the Berserkers were left in a weakened state as though they had been ill. The Berserkers drew their strength from Odin and were believed to have the power to imbue weapons with magic.

Skin-Walkers: In Navajo culture, a skin-walker is a kind of Sorcerer who can take the form of various animals, especially by wearing the skin of that animal. They were also believed to be able to borrow another person's skin or body by looking into their eyes. They were sometimes believed to take an mutated form of the animal and human, like the Wolf Man, called therianthropy.

Cat People 1982 CoverCat People 1942 Cover

What: Were-panthers

Cat People

Sex transforms the woman into a panther and killing transforms her back.

The first release from 1942 film is a masterpiece of Noir film-making and the creature is more suggested than shown. The principle character, Irena, has no idea of her heritage. In the 1944 sequel The Curse of the Cat People, Irena's spirit haunts the daughter of her former lover, who has trouble distinguishing between reality and fantasy. Despite the lurid title, the film is actually a sort of noir coming of age film with very little horror.

The 1982 film featured Natassia Kinksi in her film debut and a David Bowie soundtrack. The plot darkens as Irena discovers that her parents were brother and sister, and now her only hope of having a relationship is to mate with her evil brother, Paul (Malcolm McDowell.) Paul has no conflict with his need to kill when he mates, but Irena chooses a path of self-sacrifice rather than put the man she loves at risk.
Disney's The Shaggy Dog Okay, I know what you are thinking...but hear me out.

The Shaggy Dog grossed more at the box-office than Ben Hur. It talked about the legend of the Borgia family who used shape-shifting against their enemies. And it featured Fred McMurray.

This film is a light-hearted romp in black and white and is well worth seeing. It maintains a Disney-esque feel without becoming saccharin or silly. And it features shape-shifting, so it is relevant, right?

This all applies to the 1959 original and not to the horrid 2006 Tim Allen remake. There was a 1976 sequel (The Shaggy DA) which wasn't too bad and 1988 Made-for-TV continuation of the series but they lacked the charm and balance of the original.

Shape Shifters, Weres & Supes, Oh My! - True Blood
Who: Michelle Pfeiffer
From: LadyHawke
What: Shifters who are cursed to change form at night

Ladyhawke, like Princess Fiona from Shrek, was one form by day, another by night, but neither could change at will.

In a twist on half-day curse, Sir Gawain marries "loathly" Dame Ragnelle to find that she is a beauty under a curse. Because a Good Knight has married her, she may be beautiful either in the day when they are with others or at night when they are alone. When she asks him to choose, he acknowledges her own sovereignty by letting the choice be hers and frees her of the spell completely.

Leda and Zeus (as a Swan)
  • The Greek god Zeus often took the form of animals to mate with human women, as when he raped Leda in the form of a swan. Animangus in the Harry Potter series can change into a particular animal at will (Sirius Black into a big black dog, Rita Skeeter into a mosquito).
  • From mythology there are Silkies (Wales) and Swan Maidens (Japan) and Mermaids who sometimes have legs.
  • the Beast in "Beauty and the Beast" is a cursed noble man who is transformed back to himself by Beauty's love, as is the Frog Prince who is transform with a kiss.

Weres and Shapeshifters

The ability to change form has been part of mythology and magical practise for centuries. In mythology gods were well known for it, particularly the Nordic god Odin who was well known to change his form. Zeus would shapeshift in order to seduce women and goddess alike. The famous wizard Merlin was well known for his power to change his appearance.

Shapeshifting goes back to primitive tribal ritual and shamanic rites - people would wear wolfs skin and in ritual become the wolf before hunting to take on the wolves ability to hunt; creating their magic from ritualistic dramas. Shamans would shift in the spirit world into various animals on their vision quests and to commune with all manner of spirits.

True blood identifies the following distinctions:

Were creature: Generally refers to a man who can shapeshift but also indicates a single form, a human who can only take one other form e.g Alice (wolf form), Crystal (panther form)

Shapeshifter: Can take any form they choose e.g Sam

Welcome to Merlotte's where the talk comes cheap and fangbangers are not hard to come by. Pull up a stool and sit on down.
A thread for casual conversation (not like some of the heated debates on this site) relevant to True Blood fans but not necessarily related to the show itself.
